Navigation Training Courses
Navigation is about the ability to plan and execute your own journey.
Good navigation is enjoyable and fun, but in wild country it adds to your personal safety. Weather and best laid plans change, incidents happen. You should expect the unexpected. With sound flexible navigation skills you can confidently modify your route safely and sensibly.
The skills of navigation are not difficult to learn, however the ability to use these skills appropriately can be.
Training is offered using the National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) framework. This is a structured personal performance, non-competitive, incentive scheme for all ages:
- NNAS Bronze Award - Fields & Farmland. Suitable for beginners.
- NNAS Silver Award - Forests & Moorland. For those having some previous experience in navigation. Suitable for the country walker wishing to have confidence in their abilities.
- NNAS Gold Award - Wild Country & Micro navigation. Advanced techniques for aspirant mountain walkers requiring navigation confidence in all regions of the UK, including poor visibility and darkness. Note: to ensure high standards Gold Assessment is performed by a partner assessor.
- NNAS Gold Assessment - Those who have attended a Gold training course and want to take the assessment.
We also offer training in using GPS and popular mapping software packages (e.g. Memory Map, QUO etc).
Currently NNAS training is offered 'on-demand' only: Course Calendar.
If you are interested in the NNAS program we offer a 2 hour introductory course for free.Here's an estimate of the training requirements to acheive each award:
- Bronze award: 10 hrs
- Silver award: 12 hrs
- Gold award: 12 hrs
If you are not interested in the NNAS scheme and just require some training to improve your existing abilities, that can be also be arranged.
